What makes Andrew Wilding a trusted expert in online hypnotherapy?

Like many of my peers I chose to study psychology so I could fix myself - throughout my childhood I was told there was no cure for my stutter. When I opened my hypnotherapy practice I was still blocking on words and struggling through sentences, but after a few months my speech became fluent. Working with clients in hypnosis, I realized that I could avoid words that were going to block, and choose words that were going to flow. I don’t think I could have realized that in any other situation. I hold a degree in Psychology from the University of Cape Town, where I developed my understanding of how self-beliefs form on a subconscious level and create the root causes for behavior patterns. I completed my Diploma in Hypnotherapy from HMI California, earned my Certified Hypnotherapist designation (C.Ht.), and began practicing in 2010.

For 12 years out of my 15 in practice, I’ve specialized in producing psychoacoustic soundtracks that enhance my hypnotherapy sessions with audio engineering. Is online hypnotherapy as effective as in-person sessions?

When I began practicing online, I was concerned that online hypnotherapy would feel distant, and my clients would miss the presence of a therapist in the same room, so I designed a soundtrack to stream behind my voice during sessions. When you listen with headphones and close your eyes, the sound takes you into a different world - I might as well be in the same room. With anxiety, many clients prefer the online treatment because they can relax at home without the stress of commuting. The privacy of your home often feels like a safer space for exploring core values and processing loss and grief. The work happens in your mind, so physical location is irrelevant.

The biggest challenge for me choosing to practice online was that a hypnotherapist reads the body language of the person in hypnosis and takes note of any subconscious muscle jerks or facial expressions, or when the person takes a deep breath and seems to let go, because those are clues about what’s going on in that person’s hypnosis state. So the video is really important, it allows me to read your body language to gauge your reaction to the suggestions I’m giving, and helps me pick up on emotional cues and adjust my pacing to create a deeper calm or a new scenario rehearsal. How does hypnotherapy change your subconscious programming?

Your subconscious mind is everything about you that makes you who you are, without you making any conscious effort. It’s your personality, beliefs, the languages you know, your memories, the way you walk - it defines you. It’s function is to keep you the same person, no matter what happens, and return you to homeostasis if something does happen that could change who you are. It’s like an animal in many ways - it wants to be safe and comfortable, and have friends. It does’nt like change because it’s afraid of the unknown, it prefers what it knows. It does learn, and it can change, but only if it feels safe to do so.

Your conscious mind is your interface with the world. It’s how you present yourself, what you do, how you socialize, it makes decisions but always with a kind of gravitational pull beneath the surface - that’s because ninety percent of your decisions are made subconsciously. If you want to change your behavior or develop healthy habits, that’s a conscious decision to change your behavior. This may be accomplished by willpower and discipline, but only if your subconscious allows it. If your subconscious is against the change you want to make, try as you might, your ten percent conscious effort will only make you exhausted and frustrated.

This is where hypnotherapy comes in. If you feel like your subconscious is pulling you away from a healthy change that you want, a good hypnotherapist can create a space where you are safe, and then communicate with your subconscious mind in a kind of daydream that feels real emotionally, and reassure your subconscious that it’s safe to think about a healthy change - not doing it yet, just thinking about how nice it will be. If you do this a few times your subconscious realizes that this is not a one time thing, and it starts letting you experience what you want, and trusting you.

Dr. Maxwell Maltz, in his book Psycho-Cybernetics from 1960, observed that it takes at least 21 days to create a new habit, while the more recent Landmark Study from 2009 found it was closer to 66 days. The science to understanding how we change our subconscious programming is neuroplasticity — your brain’s natural ability to rewire itself based on repetition. Repeating the same experience of safely exploring healthy options in hypnosis, and using affirmations for daily repetition, builds and strengthens new neural pathways, and the old neural pathways that held the old behavior, fade from disuse. Hypnotherapy provides the safe space and specific suggestions and affirmations that your subconscious needs to change its programming.
